Introduction
Jaundice is the yellow discoloration of the skin that occurs when there is a build-up of a substance called bilirubin in the blood. In many causes. Yellowness in the white part of the eyes is more obvious than in the skin. Milder degrees of jaundice tend to be noted by the doctor rather than patient. If red blood cells are being broken down too rapidly the system can become overloaded, too much bilirubin is produced to be handled by the liver. Sometimes the condition is in herited, it may even be present at birth. Hemolytic anemia may also occur as a side-effect of certain drugs. Sometimes the problem is in the liver cells. If there is a fault in the uptake, processing or excretion of bilirubin, it will accumulate in the blood stream. Newborn babies can be temporarily jaundiced because of lack of mature enzymes needed to process bilirubin. In adults, alcoholism is a common cause of damage to liver cells.
Key words: Yellow discoloration, Bilirubin, Haemolytic anemia, Alcoholism.
Discussion
How to caused jaundice
Jaundice can be caused by contaminated food or water. This happens if either food or water is contaminated with sewage water. Hence this jaundice occurs more often in the rainy season when such contamination increases and it can lead to jaundice.
Monsoon season occurs jaundice and other diseases
A splash of water to our dry mind after a long sunny period that is monsoon. Most of the diseases in monsoon are caused due to mosquito bite. These mosquitoes spread diseases like malaria dengue from one another by sucking the blood and injecting to another body. As a whole, the diseases caused during monsoon are dengue malaria, jaundice, typhoid, cholera etc.
Precautions to prevent spread
To prevent the spread of hepatitis A or E, the jaundice patient should just maintain good personal hygiene like washing of hands after going to the toilet. All children are now advised vaccination against Hepatitis B along with their routine childhood vaccination. Besides, all patients with hepatitis B or C are advised to keep all cuts and wounds covered.
Precautions need to be taken for jaundice patients
Jaundice is caused by a virus; hence there is no treatment for getting rid of the virus. Our body’s defense system gets rid of the virus. The most important aspect of treatment is adequate rest, until the jaundice recovers completely. This does not mean complete bed rest. But just rest at home is adequate. The other important aspect is diet. The patient should have normal home cooked food without too much of oil. But the patient need not have boiled food.
Conclusion
The present study showed a high incidence of hepatic involvement, which indicated that falciparum malaria is one of the causes of severe jaundice in adult population in this part of the world. In patients presenting with fever and mainly conjugated hyperbilirubiaemia, there should be a high index of suspicion for falciparum malaria even in the face of negative blood films. A combination of late presentation, altered sensorium, severe conjugated hyperbilirubinemia, prolonged prothrombin time, low albumin, elevated urea and creatinine and a low platelet count were significant predictors of adverse outcome in Falciparum Malaria.
