Abstract:
Caralluma adscendens Roxb a genus of the family Asclepiadaceae is an important medicinal and widely distributed succulent plant found in dry regions of world. The present paper deals with invitro anti cancer and hepatoprotective activities of methanolic extract of Caralluma adscendens [Roxb]. Extraction was carried out using various solvents. The extract was subjected to Preliminary Phytochemical Screening for the presence of different chemical groups. The plant contains phytochemicals such as carbohydrate, glycoside, alkaloids, phytosterols, tannins, flavonoids. Methanolic extract is subjected to column chromatography and flavonoid is isolated and it is characterized by IR, NMR and MASS. Invitro anti cancer activity was done by Micro culture tetrazolium (MTT) assay. Hepatoprotective activity was done by using paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity and the various biochemical parameters like SGOT, SGPT, SALP, Bilirubin and Total protein were assessed. The methanolic extract possessed anticancer activity to varying extent. It shows that flavonoid present in these extracts may be possibly responsible for the anticancer activities. The extracts were tested at different dose levels to know if increase the concentration of doses then increases the growth inhibition of cell and give the significant result. The Methanolic extract Caralluma Adscendans treatments, the reduced concentrations of SGOT, SGPT and SALP as a result of plant extract administration observed during the present study might probably be due in part to the Presence of flavonoids. Liver protective herbal drugs contain a variety of chemical constituents. Bilirubin is one of the most useful clinical clues to this verity of necrosis and its accumulation is a measure of binding, conjugation and excretory capacity of hepatocyte. Decrease in serum bilirubin after treatment with the extract in liver damage induced by Paracetamol, indicated the effectiveness of the extract in normal functional status of the liver.
