Esomeprazole containing mucoadhesive tablets were developed by direct compression method. Three mucoadhesive polymers namely Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose K 100 M, Sodium Alginate and Sodium Carboxy Methyl Cellulose, were used for preparation of tablets to relief from gastric ulcer. Compatibility of Esomeprazole with excipients used were checked by DSC and FTIR studies. The prepared tablets were evaluated for different physical parameters and in vitro dissolution studies were performed. The prepared tablets passed all the physical tests for buccal mucoadhesive tablets, shown good swelling characteristics.  The release mechanism drug formulation was followed zero order release kinetics. The present study concluded that, Sodium Alginate containing buccal mucoadhesive tablets of esomeprazole showed good release and bioadhesion characteristics.
