Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose in the context of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency.  Acute complications include hypo-glycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis or nonketotic hyperosmolar coma. Incretins are a group of gastrointestinal hormones that cause an increase in the amount of insulin released from the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans after eating, even before blood glucose become elevated.  The incretin effect may have important implicationsin reducing mealtime hyperglycemia in individuals with T2DM.  As many drugs are available as antihyperglycemic agents, new class of incretin mimetics are used in the treatment of diabetes type 2.
